Grassroots organization 350.org energized a huge global day of action on Saturday October 24 about the looming climate crisis. Find out how to maintain the activities.

This movement to save our planet is stepping up activities and asked people to take at least one day Saturday, October 24 and use it to stop the climate crisis. Up to a million people took action for 350: International Day of Climate Action. At the time of writing, people have signed on to initiate 5000 actions in 141 countries from the United States to Canada to South America and from India to Europe and beyond. The intention of the global protest is to drive home the crucial importance of the number 350.

“350.org coordinated a successful international day of action on October 24, 2009 at hundreds of iconic places around the world - from the Taj Mahal to the Great Barrier Reef - to spark a global movement that will unite the public, media, and political leaders behind the 350 goal,” reports 350.org media representatives.

Global Warming

350 is the red line for human beings. The most recent science says that unless there are reductions in the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere to 350 parts per million, there will be huge and irreversible damage to the earth. The science is clear: global warming is happening faster than ever and humans are mainly responsible. Global warming is caused by the release of greenhouse gases mainly from carbon dioxide.

But global citizens – young and old can do something. Residents of planet earth can all turn the tide. Every action counts! All around the world a movement is building to take on the climate crisis, to get humanity out of the danger zone and below 350. Activists, artists (such as the Zinnia Art Gallery), athletes (including Anders Aukland, a Nordic Skier from Norway or Adam Craig, Mountain Biker from Bend, Oregon),musicians (like Jonny Lives & the Eco-Lectric Tour), scientists like Dr. David Suzuki, scholars, educators, students (Lincoln High School in San Francisco), church leaders like the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu, businesses (like Clif Bar) and even progressive politicians are uniting around the world to make the world a more livable place.

Environmental Action: What Can You Do?

  • Distribute compost.
  • Create a meal using the 100 Mile Diet.
  • Organize a schoolyard garden.
  • Yes many of these ideas may have been suggested before, but good things are worth repeating!

For example: in New York city, activists organized activities on the George Washington bridge – a walk, bike, run, wheelchair event with 350 signs, a banner drop and then music, food & drink. Look for more great ideas on the 350 website.

SIGN ON NOW!Many of these actions are ones that should be continued throughout the next years to keep up the pressure to meet 350 goals.
